Grassroots Development Laboratory
Position:  Director
Location: Bagar, Jhunjhunu District, Rajasthan

Interested in finding innovative solutions to India’s development challenges? 

The Grassroots Development Laboratory (GDL), is designed to challenge the most talented young people from around the world in solving some of India’s pressing problems.  The Piramal Foundation recruits dedicated volunteers and intends to engage a local team in various development experiments in the areas of livelihoods, health services delivery, teacher quality, and technology utilization.  There are currently six participants; we plan to grow to a team of three dozen by the end of 2007.   The Programme Director is responsible for executing GDL strategy on-the-ground and for managing the entire GDL team.

Responsibility Overview

  • Manage the overall direction of each work stream at GDL
  • Ensure performance in delivery of objectives across GDL projects
  • Oversee and manage the GDL team, including volunteer and staff
  • Determine staff needs and recruit candidates locally
  • Oversee the training and professional development of the GDL team
  • Report regularly to the Piramal Foundation on progress
  • Implement the Foundation’s strategy through the GDL team
  • Manage relationships with partner organizations and local grantees

  • Preparation of new volunteers and staff
    • Project materials, introductory research
    • Background on development approach and local nuances
    • Set professional standards for the GDL team.
  • Set objectives and implement strategy for each work stream
    • Work with teams to set periodic objectives and measureables for streams
    • Shape ground-level execution strategy on objectives
    • Determine evaluation metric
    • Evaluate and report on progress and products of work streams
    • Determine directional changes as needed
  • Staff Management and Support
    • Regular communications and support of volunteers and staff
    • Facilitate information sharing among the team
    • Ensure documentation is constructive and efficient
    • Ensure environment fosters success in objectives
    • Problem-solving to help fellows be effective through their projects
  • Determining human and other resource needs
    • Determine volunteer opportunities for GDL
    • Assist in selection and evaluation of volunteers
  • Manage local budget and financial programs
    • Manage and be accountable for local expenditures of GDL
    • Project budget for local operations
    • Manage Bagar Community Fund evaluation and fund disbursement
  • Other responsibilities as needed to manage GDL

Required

Qualifications Desired

  • Experience in the Indian voluntary sector and an understanding of grassroots development and its challenges
  • Experience managing a team and delivering on objectives
  • Intuitive sense of service
  • Fluency in Hindi
  • Passion to understand and motivate people

Work Environment

Supervised by the COO or CEO of the Piramal Foundation. Work closely with a group of dynamic young people relentlessly pursuing solutions to pressing problems.  Teams are intensive and will work an average of 50-60 hours per week.
