Surveys complete, looking for a teacher

Posted By Ashish

My goal this past week was to compile the results from the survey, as well as to start looking for a teacher.

The survey results have all been entered into an Excel spreadsheet, and I’m currently looking through some of the results. The main cause of the delay was in trying to delegate the work to another team member. While he did do quality work finally, the delay pushed us back. Two interesting results from the survey so far: The most convenient time for the class for most students is in the morning, from 7am-10am. Also, of those interviewed, more people would prefer going to Jaipur (about 180km away) for a job, than to Jhunjhunu (15 km away, commutable daily).

The job hunt for a teacher has already started. I interviewed three teachers from Bagar who are/have been computer teachers are schools. Their grasp of the course material was generally not sufficient, and I do not have confidence that they can teach a class independently. Currently, the plan is to hire a proficient teacher, from another city if need be. Also considering training or providing apprentice opportunities to teachers from Bagar to improve the local talent.

Overall, momentum is definitely gathering towards the class: the survey has brought about publicity for the class, a teacher should be found in the next two weeks. I still need to translate and polish off the curriculum that our intern, Anjuli, developed over the summer, but we have enough to kick-start the class. Barring unforeseen happenings, the class looks likely to start on its intended date of September 17th.
