Small wins

The Past Week: 08.27.07 09.01.07

This week, the reasons for not reaching my intended goals is my fault nothing in the field set me back just my own self. Therefore it would be boring to discuss why and how I did not prioritize certain activities over others.

What is interesting though, is what I discovered just by talking to people. Firstly, Lakshmi had talked to a Pizza Hut Employee Trainer about my project and gotten his card when she was in Jaipur last. I finally got in touch with him and he told me that he had a training curriculum that I could use (for free!!) for my own hospitality training course so long as I alter it so that it’s general.

Secondly, If that weren’t sufficiently exciting, I also spoke with a manager of an export house in Jaipur this week. Several months ago when I was in Jaipur, I thought I would randomly drop in at an export house to understand what their hiring needs were. The manager found what I was doing compelling and offered assistance if I ever needed it.

Since the Ashok Nagar Mahila Mandal is no longer together and a few women from the group have asked me if I would be able to find them work, I gave the manager a call. He said he would try to help me by coming to Bagar this week and meeting the women. He even offered to bring a woman with him who will be able to train the Ashok Nagar women in garment making or hand work.

Basically why I’ve brought up both of these instances together is because they both involve communication and innovation. If you look back on these instances, I haven’t done anything extraordinary. I just thought about other people who may have knowledge of particular industries beyond career consultants and training providers. When I called the trainer from Pizza Hut, I wasn’t expecting for him to just offer me his curriculum. I was thinking that I’d ask him what skills he looks for in those applying for jobs and whether I could first look at the curriculum he has and then perhaps buy it if I liked what I saw. In the second case, the manager of the export house prefers hiring women and is interested in doing something socially responsible but didn’t know how. It seems that there are tons of opportunities for people, it’s just a matter of communication, resourcefulness and taking initiative.
