Yes, it’s the same goal not reached � again. I set this goal for myself for the past month or so and my inability to follow through on it has carried over to this past week as well. Since Thursday, I’ve delayed the transportation of the compost twice.
Since last Friday (the 6th) I’ve been spending around ten hours at the shed trying to prepare the compost. While I’ve gotten some participation from the women, things would have moved a lot faster had everyone contributed. In addition, I’ve been monitoring the women’s work at the compost shed since March but I noted only this week that all the women had not done a great job of raking their vermicompost beds (even today, there was a lot of fresh gober in each bed meaning that this compost will not be ready by the final transportation date which we have set as Monday).
Had the women all been fully participating since last week, we would have been able to address this fresh gober issue more quickly because we would have removed the prepared compost at a faster rate than the three or four of us were doing. By Tuesday of this week I was seeing that this job wouldn’t get done with just three or four people so I decided to pay the women if they were to come for two hours of work per day for two days. Incentivizing the work was revolutionary. There was nearly 100% participation (with the exception of Santosh Ji who didn’t come because she is mourning her mother’s death for 25 days, everyone showed). The downside of this incentive was that the work still wasn’t done and I didn’t want to have to keep paying the women to come. Though there was no incentive to show up yesterday, nearly everyone came. However today was a different story � only three others came.
Frustrating as it is that I should have tried to instill more commitment and ownership in the women, I have my mind set on Monday and am going to try to do my best to have as much of the compost ready as possible by that morning.
